Since the early days of the internet, the idea of giving content away for free online has been one of the most revolutionary marketing ideas to hit the online world.

Internet users are becoming increasingly sophisticated however, and more and more are resistant to submitting their personal details online.

According to digital marketing guru David Meerman Scott, businesses that require customers to sign up before they can access the free content, or put up similar barriers, are shooting themselves in the foot.
